Men with prostate cancer are at higher risk of developing diabetes or diabetes risk factors if they receive androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) to block the production or action of male hormones that can fuel the growth of this cancer. The results of this new study on the second-most common cancer in men were presented at The Endocrine Society's 93rd Annual Meeting in Boston.

Prevent diabetes having fun: beer and wine can reduce your risk of getting sick
Have a beer
We're not suggesting you host a "Get Drunk for Diabetes" party, but knocking back a couple every now and then might lower your risk for Type 2. A recent study published in the American Journal of Epidemiology showed a link between moderate alcohol consumption and lower diabetes risk. Cheers to that!

The lack of proper sleep can be a cause of diabetes
[A] discovery, detailed in this week's advanced online publication of the journal Nature Medicine, provides an entirely new biochemical approach for scientists to develop treatments for obesity and type 2 diabetes. It also raises the interesting possibility that some of the rise in diabetes in the U.S. and other major industrialized countries could be a consequence of disturbances in sleep-wake cycles from our increasingly around-the-clock lifestyles.

Combining an antidepressant and an anti-cholesterol drug may increase the risk of diabetes
A combination of two common drugs – one an antidepressant, the other used to lower blood cholesterol – may put people at risk of developing diabetes. This unexpected finding shows the benefits of data mining to discover hidden hazards lurking in our medicine cabinets.

What are the symptoms of gestational diabetes
Diabetes stemming from pregnancy can cause a host of problems for baby and mother alike, including birth complications and a higher risk of developing the more serious type 2 diabetes later in life. In a new study, researchers say they've identified a series of routine health measures that can help doctors predict years in advance which women will develop pregnancy-related diabetes, paving the way for lifestyle changes and other early prevention efforts.

If you gain weight between pregnancies, you can develop diabetes
Women who gain weight between their first and second pregnancies are at greater risk of developing gestational diabetes in their second pregnancy than women whose weight remained stable, according to a study published today. But losing weight between pregnancies can reduce the risk of gestational diabetes in the second pregnancy — especially for those who were overweight or obese to begin with.

Gestational diabetes can be predicted up to seven years before pregnancy
The risk a woman runs of developing diabetes during pregnancy can be identified as early as seven years before she gets pregnant based on measurements of blood sugar and body weight, a new study says. The study, published in the online issue of the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, looked at data from 580 ethnically diverse women who participated in a multi-phased health checkup in northern California between 1984 and 1996.

Harvard: Diet sodas don't increase the risk of diabetes
Diet soda and other artificially-sweetened drinks - previously implicated in raising the chance of developing diabetes - are not guilty, suggests a new study from Harvard University researchers. In a large group of men followed for 20 years, drinking regular soda and other sugary drinks often meant a person was more likely to get diabetes, but that was not true of artificially-sweetened soft drinks, or coffee or tea.

Almonds may help combat diabetes and cardiovascular disease
With nearly 16 million Americans living today with pre-diabetes, a condition that is the precursor to type 2 diabetes, and half of all Americans expected to have some form of diabetes by the year 2020, healthy eating is more important than ever.(1,2) But here is some good news: a recent scientific study shows that incorporating almonds into your diet can help treat and possibly prevent type 2 diabetes, as well as cardiovascular disease.

Having many children may increase the risk of obesity and diabetes
Multiple pregnancies may increase the risk of obesity, diabetes and the buildup of plaque in the arteries, suggests new research in mice. Scientists from the University of Cincinnati and colleagues studied mice late in gestation in either their first or fourth pregnancy. Those in their fourth pregnancy had severe glucose intolerance and excess fat tissue, while those in their first pregnancy did not have glucose intolerance and had less fat.

An eye exam can help determine the damage caused by diabetes
A glimpse in an eye might soon be enough to diagnose the nerve damage associated with diabetes. Up to 50 per cent of people with diabetes experience nerve damage, which in extreme cases leads to the loss of limb sensation, prompting the need for amputation.

Blueberries reduce the risk of diabetes and high blood pressure
Two new studies add to the growing body of research about the many health benefits of consuming blueberries. Researchers from Pennington Biomedical Research Center (PBRC) have found that blueberries help to prevent obesity-related insulin resistance, which leads to type 2 diabetes, while researchers from Oklahoma State University (OSU) have found similar success in using blueberries to prevent hypertension.

The potassium may be the cause of type 2 diabetes strikes more African-Americans than whites
Lower potassium levels in the blood may help explain why African-Americans are twice as likely to be diagnosed with type 2 diabetes as whites, according to a new study by Johns Hopkins researchers. The findings, if confirmed, suggest that part of diabetes prevention may someday prove as easy as taking a cheap potassium supplement.

Diabetes has now reached epidemic proportions: 6.4% of world population
People with diabetes in the United States and several other countries do not get effective treatment to control their disease, U.S. researchers said on Tuesday, and health insurance, not personal wealth, plays a big role in determining which diabetics get good care.

What steps to take if you have gestational diabetes
If you had gestational diabetes when you were pregnant, you and your child have a lifelong risk for getting diabetes. Because of this risk, you need to be tested for diabetes after your baby is born, then at least once every three years. Reduce your risk by taking small steps for you and your family. If you weigh too much, you can prevent or delay type 2 diabetes if you lose a small amount of weight and become more active. Your children can lower their risk for type 2 diabetes if they don’t become overweight. Serve them healthy foods and help them to be more active.

The plastic containers containing BPA may increase the risk of diabetes and cardiovascular diseases
If you live in the U.S. and eat any packaged foods at all, you are probably also consuming the chemical bisphenol A, or BPA. Now, for the first time, scientists have made a startling discovery about the chemical that could help explain the epidemic of heart disease and diabetes in this country.
